August 2011

The Addiction Research Interest Group (ARIG), an interdisciplinary group encompassing leading research scholars across the humanities, social sciences, and field of medicine who work with substance dependent populations was recently awarded a $50,000 pilot investment grant for the project entitled, "The Impact of Drug Abuse on Infectious Disease." This project's aims are twofold:

  1. To address health care disparities of lower-income and minority individuals with co-occurring infectious diseases and substance use problems.
  2. To enhance understanding of the impact of addiction on the course of infectious diseases by fostering cross disciplinary collaborations on existing and proposed research proposals.

This funding will allow the ARIG to establish collaborative forums and infrastructure to bring interdisciplinary research and community treatment providers together. Dr. Pagano, the "Helping Others" P.I. is a Co-Investigator on this ambitious and much needed endeavor.
